Where I’m Coming From

Growing up, baseball was my life. I went to college in North Carolina on a full athletic scholarship; I was being primed as a future Major League ballplayer, and I couldn’t wait to make my mark on the playing field. Well, life had other plans. On Christmas break in my junior year, I fell and tore a ligament in my left knee. I underwent intensive surgery, but my knee was never the same again. Even so, I worked hard to get back in shape and was a fifth round draft pick for the Cincinnati Reds.

Believe it or not, I chose to finish out my degree in Sports Management instead. I got stronger and played better than ever before, but I failed to get redrafted. My knee injury had scared the scouts away. Even so, I continued to angle for a career in baseball, at least in the managerial sense, but the MLB strike of 1994 made that impossible.

So I returned home, and got a job in my dad’s construction company. But that was only temporary. Soon after, on the suggestion of my uncle, I started a successful career in microelectronics. I inspected major pharmaceutical and microelectronic chip plants, like Intel and Samsung, and was paid almost six-figures. It was an exciting time; I traveled all over the country, learned a new and exciting trade, and best of all, met my beautiful wife Stephanie. A couple of years later we had our first child, and decided to settle down in Oregon.

My company was downsizing some of their upper-echelon players, and one of them happened to be me. I didn’t mind, because it coincided with my new (and greatest) passion—raising a family. (And I got a pretty substantial severance package to ease the break.) Stephanie and I had two more kids. While I enjoyed my time off as a stay-at-home dad, I’m industrious by nature, so I was ready to get back into the workforce.

I went into construction with a friend of mine, and felt pretty comfortable doing hands-on work in the trenches. I got my contractor’s license a year later. My family and I moved to Florida, where I built my own business from scratch in the remodeling industry. At first, I made a hefty profit with only a handful of employees, but eventually, the long hours and exhausting labor took a toll on my personal life. Then the recession hit. It wasn’t a good time to be in the remodeling business, to say the least.

It seemed that the harder I worked, the less money I made, and the less time I had to spend with my family. This was not a lifestyle I wanted to continue, day in and day out, with no end in sight.

I’ve never been the type of person to succumb to feelings of frustration or despair. But one thing was certain: I didn’t want to keep living like this. The most important thing to me is my family, so I chose to make the necessary changes to bring my life in harmony with what I valued the most.

What Next?

I’ve reconnected to my love of baseball by acting as head coach to my son’s baseball and football teams. My family and I travel to Disney World four times a year because it’s what we love to do—and we have the precious freedom to do it.
